Apply for Accreditation
This page gives institutions a public overview of the joint CLET-GTEC accreditation pathway. The actual application is completed on the accreditation website.
A single pathway with distinct regulatory inputs
Under the Legal Education Act, 2026, accreditation is coordinated with the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission. The model gives institutions one front-facing process while preserving each regulator's statutory role.
Institutional and Tertiary Quality Assurance
1. Checking the School's Quality (Led by GTEC)
The Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) looks at the big picture. They make sure the university is a safe, well-run, and proper place to learn.
What they check: The campus buildings, how the school is managed, and if the school has the money and resources to stay open.
The result: They officially approve the school and add it to a public list, so you know the school is real and trusted.
Legal Education Standards Opinion
2. Checking the Law Training (Led by CLET)
The Council of Legal Education and Training (CLET) focuses purely on the law program itself. They make sure students will actually be ready to work as lawyers after they graduate.
What they check: The law teachers, the classes, the law library, and whether students get hands-on legal practice.
The result: They give an expert "thumbs-up" that the law classes meet the strict standards of the legal profession.
One Front-Facing Accreditation Pathway
3. One Simple Team Effort
Instead of making schools apply to two different places and do everything twice, GTEC and CLET work together as one team.
One application: Schools only have to apply once.
One visit: Both groups visit the school together at the same time to check everything.
Clear answers: Both groups share the exact same official results with the public, so there is never any confusion for students or parents.

Accreditation Instruments
- Joint LLB and LPT Accreditation Standards Manual
- Digital application pack and self-assessment template
- Curriculum mapping and faculty qualifications matrix
- Law library, legal database and facilities checklist
- Joint scoring rubric, remediation notice and student protection templates
LLB Academic and LPT Professional Programmes
The accreditation process recognises two routes. Institutions must select the correct route and provide evidence for the standards attached to that route.
Bachelor of Laws Accreditation
The LLB route is the academic accreditation route for institutions seeking approval to run Bachelor of Laws programmes. It is the entry point for academic legal education accreditation and is assessed against curriculum, staffing, infrastructure, library, policy and governance standards.
- Academic curriculum and delivery evidence
- Library, facilities and policy documents
- CLET and GTEC document review
- Joint inspection and standards scoring
Law Practice Training Accreditation
The LPT route is the professional training accreditation route. It is not automatic from LLB eligibility: an institution that only qualifies for the LLB route should not proceed to LPT unless it satisfies the higher professional-training requirements.
- Practitioner register and professional training evidence
- Moot court, floor plans, conditions and training resources
- CLET verification and LPT standards scoring
- CLET recommendation for professional training approval

Standards Set With GTEC
Before You Start
- Complete the Self-Assessment Review before beginning the application
- Create the institution profile and select the correct category
- Confirm whether the application is for LLB, LPT or both routes
- Upload all required evidence and pay the prescribed fee
- Resolve pre-application gaps before proceeding to assessment
One Process, One Inspection, One Outcome
The deck sets out a unified accreditation workflow: one application path, one joint inspection, one reconciled evaluation matrix and one consistent public outcome.
Pre-Application Engagement
The institution expresses interest. GTEC confirms institutional eligibility while CLET confirms the legal education programme status and the Joint Secretariat issues the application pack.
Reasons an Application May Not Proceed
- Incomplete or inaccurate information
- Missing documents or insufficient evidence
- Minimum requirements not met
- Non-compliance with statutory standards
- Outstanding fees or other deficiencies
Pre-application issues must be addressed before the application continues. Post-application refusals require the institution to address findings and reapply from the application stage.
After Accreditation
- Annual compliance returns submitted to CLET and GTEC
- Risk monitoring for staffing, intake growth, student complaints, weak moderation or unapproved curriculum changes
- Periodic inspections, including three-year inspections and targeted inspections where risk indicators arise
- Remediation, conditional continuation, suspension or revocation where serious breaches are not resolved
- Student protection measures where refusal, suspension or revocation affects enrolled students
